Pro tip: Choosing between a full weld repair or a patch plate on a 3/8 inch boiler shell

Had a job last month on a 30 year old boiler in a plant outside Toledo. The shell had a 4 inch long crack near a nozzle. The choice was grinding it out and doing a full weld repair, which meant a lot of prep and heat control, or cutting out a section and putting in a patch plate. I went with the patch plate. It took a full day to cut, bevel, and fit the new piece, but the weld passes were cleaner and the X-ray came back perfect on the first shot. The inspector said it was a solid call because the metal around the crack was pretty thin. Has anyone else had to make that call on an older vessel? What made you pick one way over the other?

I finally had a treated 4x4 post snap clean off at the base on a job in Tempe last Thursday, and it was only 18 months old.

The homeowner was understandably upset, so I had to dig out the old concrete footing and pour a new one, which set the whole project back by a full day and cost me about $300 in extra materials and labor, so what's the best way you all handle warranty calls on materials that fail way too early?

I mean, our whole legal team at the firm in Charlotte was pushing to take this supplier breach of contract claim to trial, saying we had a strong case. But after looking at the discovery, I was the one who argued we should settle fast, even though the initial demand was $250k. We got it down to $150k and avoided six more months of legal fees and depositions. Has anyone else had to push back on the 'always fight' mindset when the numbers just didn't add up?

I dropped about $600 on the Ford Performance calibration kit for my truck. It was a simple plug-in deal, took maybe 20 minutes in my driveway. They had these old Dell OptiPlex machines from 2015, but every single one had an SSD and 8 gigs of RAM added.
