I walked into a library in Portland and saw their public computer setup
They had these old Dell OptiPlex machines from 2015, but every single one had an SSD and 8 gigs of RAM added. The librarian said they did it themselves for about fifty bucks a machine instead of buying new ones. It completely changed my mind about always pushing for new hardware on a tight budget. What's the oldest system you've kept running well with just a couple cheap parts?

I read about a school district in Ohio that kept a whole lab of 2012 iMacs running. They just swapped the old hard drives for cheap SSDs and maxed out the RAM to 16 gigs. Honestly, the teachers said the difference was night and day for basic web apps and office stuff. It saved them thousands compared to a full replacement. Makes you realize how much life is left in old hardware with a simple fix.

My 2013 laptop feels brand new since I swapped its hard drive, so maybe I should stop calling it a fossil?
