Tried flotation on a bone fragment and got nothing but mud

I soaked a deer bone chunk from a creek bed in water for 3 days to separate dirt from the surface. Used a fine sieve and gentle spray, but the bone just crumbled apart. I learned that soaking waterlogged bone is risky if it's already fragile. Anyone else had luck stabilizing bones before doing water cleaning?

TIL from a random guy at a head shop about packing tighter

I was at this little smoke shop in Austin last month, just picking up some screens. An older guy working there saw my vape and started talking about how I was packing my bowl too loose. He said I should press the herb down a bit more, like halfway tight, and then cap it with a fine layer. I tried it with my Arizer that night and the vapor was way thicker and more flavorful. He told me air pockets just waste your hit. I thought I knew my technique after three years but that one tip really stuck with me. Has anyone else had a random employee give them a game changing trick like that?

Spent 11 hours patching a single hole in my drywall

I had a fist-sized hole in my living room wall from when I moved a bookshelf wrong. Thought it would take maybe 2 hours to patch it up. First I tried using a mesh patch kit from Home Depot but the compound kept cracking. Had to cut out the whole section, add a backing board, cut a new piece of drywall, and tape the seams. Then the mud dried uneven and I had to sand and reapply three times. By the time I got the texture to match the existing wall I had wasted a whole Saturday. Has anyone else had a simple drywall fix turn into a nightmare like this?

I was cleaning out my garage in Portland last weekend and found a stack of 'Sky & Telescope' issues from the 90s. One article mentioned the Hubble Space Telescope had taken over 1.4 million observations, which just blew my mind thinking about all that raw data. I used to think you could eyeball the ladder pipe angle on a cutterhead dredge

For years on the Mississippi, I'd just set it by feel and watch the spoil color. Then we hit a rock shelf near Baton Rouge and bent a drive shaft because the angle was too steep. The repair bill was over 15 grand. Now I use the inclinometer every single time before we start cutting, no exceptions. Anyone else get burned by skipping a simple check like that?

Just saw something weird at the flour mill tour in Red Wing

They had a huge open bin of bread flour near the exit, and I watched a kid stick his whole hand in it before his mom pulled him away. The staff didn't replace the flour or even mark the bin as contaminated. Has anyone else run into this kind of thing at a supplier, and how do you check your bulk ingredients are clean?

Appreciation post: My old graph paper maps versus my new digital ones

I spent years drawing my fantasy world on graph paper, you know, the kind with the little blue squares. It felt right, like I was some old timey explorer. But last month I got a cheap drawing tablet for my birthday, and I tried making a map in Krita (it's free, which is nice). The difference is huge. With the paper, if I messed up a coastline, I had to erase and hope the paper didn't tear. With the digital layer, I can just nudge a whole mountain range over without a trace. I redrew the entire river system for my main continent in about an hour, something that would have taken me a whole weekend and a lot of white-out on paper. Has anyone else made this switch and found one specific tool, like the layer function, that just made everything click?
