My old laptop finally gave up last Monday, so I couldn't run any of the games I usually play, and I had zero cash for a repair shop. I walked to the main branch downtown and grabbed a bunch of PC games they lend out for 3 weeks at a time, plus they have a quiet corner with ancient desktops that run them fine. Has anyone else leaned on their local library for gaming when their gear breaks down, or am I the only one this desperate?

Had to pick between a gym membership and a climbing gym, chose the free option

I was trying to keep my hobby of rock climbing alive but I only had $25 a month to spare. The climbing gym wanted $60, so I caved and got a planet fitness membership for $10 and spent the rest on a pair of used climbing shoes from a thrift store. Now I've been bouldering on the playground equipment at the park for a month, and honestly it's been way more fun than I expected. I used to think memberships were a scam. Then I did the actual math on my local science museum. Single admission is $18, but the basic membership is $60. Three years ago I cut cable and got a library card to fill the gap. Last week I realized I haven't paid for a movie, show, or audiobook since, and I'm reading like 4 books a month now. Last winter I was dead set on getting into stargazing. Saw all these photos online and figured I needed a real telescope, the whole setup. Found one used for $200 and almost pulled the trigger. Then a buddy said, why not start with the library's telescope loan program? Sure enough, our local branch has one you can check out for two weeks at a time. I've used it 4 times since February and I'm learning way more than I would've throwing money at gear I don't understand. Last month I got really into birdwatching. Bought a decent pair of binoculars, a field guide, the whole thing. Then realized I was spending more time fiddling with focus than seeing birds. So last week I just started sitting on a park bench with no gear. Just eyes and ears. Saw a heron catch a fish and a woodpecker doing its thing. All free. Used to spend $60 a month on yarn, now I unravel old sweaters from the thrift store

Back in 2017 I was dropping real cash at the craft store every payday. Then I lost my job in March and had to figure out something else. Started buying wool sweaters for $3 each at Goodwill in Portland and unraveling them at home. It takes about 2 hours per sweater but you get like 400 yards of decent yarn. The seams are a pain and some sweaters are too felted to work, but ive made 3 scarves and a hat so far. Anyone else tried this or got a better cheap yarn hack?
