Found out my chickens can recognize over 100 different faces

I was reading some random poultry science blog last night while waiting for my eggs to boil, and I stumbled on a study that said chickens can identify up to 100 human faces. I always thought my girls just screamed at anyone who walked by, but apparently they remember who feeds them and who doesn't. My neighbor Bob came over to borrow a rake yesterday and my hen Gertrude actually followed him around clucking softly. Has anyone else noticed their flock acting differently around certain people?

That moment I learned door hangers need to be level, not just tight

Been doing elevator mods for about 8 years now and always just cranked those door hanger bolts down as hard as I could. Last week I had a job in a 12 story building where every single door was dragging on the sill. Took me three hours to realize the hangers were torqued so tight they bent the track just slightly. Backed them off, leveled each one with a 6 inch level, and the doors glided perfect. Any of you guys ever over-tighten something simple and create a bigger headache?

Noticed a huge shift in how shops handle disc brake noise over the last 5 years

Back in 2019 everyone just told customers to "bed them in" but now I see three different bleed kits and a torque wrench come out before anyone even spins the wheel.

Can we talk about how cassette removal tools have changed?

I was cleaning out my garage last weekend and found my old cassette removal tool from the early 90s. It was just a simple pin spanner with two prongs that fit into those little holes on the lockring. I got to thinking how back then, you'd sometimes strip those holes if you weren't careful, and now we all just use these big socket-style tools that slide right on. I looked up the model I used to own and saw that Park Tool still makes a similar design for some vintage hubs, but it's almost a niche item now. Has anyone else here had trouble fitting newer tools on older cassettes?

My Baratza grinder seized up mid-pull yesterday and I had to take it apart on the counter

Burrs locked tight at 7am and I had to completely disassemble it with a hex key while my wife waited for her latte. Has anyone else had one of these just lock up out of nowhere?

My bokashi bin smelled like pickles not rot, I was wrong about it

I kept seeing people swear by bokashi composting in their apartments and I thought it was just another gimmick that would stink up my 400 square foot studio in Chicago. After three weeks of my regular compost bin getting fruit flies I gave it a shot, and the fermented smell is actually kind of mild and not gross at all. Has anyone else found a method they were super skeptical about that actually worked better than expected?

Called BS on ceramic coatings for 2 years, finally caved

Kept telling customers it was just overpriced wax in a bottle. My own truck got the hood paint baked by the Texas sun, so I gave in. Bought a $60 kit from Griot's, spent 4 hours on a Saturday. That was 14 months ago, truck sits outside in the heat every day. Water still beads up like day one, no swirl marks from my washes. Painted bumpers on my work van are already fading but the hood on the truck looks new. Anyone else have a product they swore was snake oil that actually held up?

I'll take a lattice boom over hydraulic any day for rough terrain jobs

Been running both types for about 15 years now. Last month I had a job up in the hills outside Boulder where the ground was just soft and uneven. The Grove hydraulic I was on kept sinking and needed mats every 50 feet. Buddy of mine showed up with a old Manitowoc lattice boom and walked right through the same spot. Less counterweight too. I get that hydraulics are faster to set up but for real nasty ground conditions give me the lattice boom every time. Has anyone else found one type way more forgiving on soft soil?

Changed my mind about using pea gravel for drainage in closed terrariums

I always put a thick layer of pea gravel at the bottom of every build until one of my jars started smelling like a swamp after 2 weeks. Turns out the gravel just traps stagnant water if you don't have a real false bottom setup, so now I use a mesh barrier with activated charcoal instead. Has anyone else had trouble with that method failing on them?

That time I tried to nail gun a staircase skirt board without pre-drilling

Last month I was trimming out a staircase in an old house near Pittsburgh. The skirt board was thick oak, figured I'd just blast through it with my 18ga nailer. First nail bent sideways, second one barely sank, third one blew a chunk out of the wood. Looked like a mess. Ended up having to fill the gouges and re-cut a new piece. Cost me an extra 60 bucks and half a day. Anyone else run into situations where you just assume a material will behave one way and it bites you?
