My feeder spot was dead for months, now it's packed every morning

I put up a new feeder in my backyard in Portland back in February and barely saw a bird for like 3 months. Just a couple house sparrows here and there, real disappointing. Then I moved it about 10 feet closer to my big rhododendron bush in late April and it totally changed things. Now I'm getting chickadees, finches, and even a pair of juncos every day right around 7am. I guess the bush gives them cover so they feel safe coming in. Has anyone else had a spot that was quiet until you changed something small like that?

That forge weld that popped while I was quenching it in Austin

I was at my shop near the river and a billet I'd been building for 6 hours just split apart when I hit the water. Turns out I was rushing the heat and not letting it soak long enough in the fire. Has anyone else had a weld fail because they got impatient with the temperature?

The way I used to make mixtapes vs how I do it now is so different it's wild

Honestly, back in high school I would spend hours recording songs off the radio for a mix, trying to catch that one track without the DJ talking over the intro. Now I just rip playlists from Spotify onto a blank tape through my stereo, takes like 20 minutes tops. Anyone else feel like the whole process lost some of the magic or is that just me getting old?

The old guy at the lab who showed me how to load a reel in the dark

I was fumbling with my Paterson tank at this photo lab in Austin last year and this retiree named Bob just came over and said "you're fighting it, let the film breathe." He showed me a trick where you pinch the spool with your thumb and forefinger while feeding the leader in and it clicked instantly for me. Anyone else have a stranger teach them something that totally changed their film workflow?

I was looking up options for my old gas water heater in Austin and stumbled on a study from the Rocky Mountain Institute. They said a standard electric heat pump model saves about 2 metric tons of CO2 annually compared to gas. That's like not driving a car for 4 months. My uncle swore by pre-washing film before developing. Told me it cuts down on dust spots.

Tried it with a roll of HP5 last weekend and ended up with weird water marks all over the negatives. Has anyone else gotten bad results from rinsing film before the chemicals?

I was at Home Depot in Austin last weekend picking up some drawer slides, and this older guy in the aisle just showed me how he adjusts hinges with a single screwdriver. No level, no measuring, just eyeballed it and the door was dead straight. Totally changed how I think about alignment on my own jobs. My knife sharpening routine changed after cutting myself at Bouchon Bakery

Used to just use a honing steel and call it good, but after a nasty slip on a dull chef's knife three years ago in the pastry kitchen, I started going to a proper whetstone. Now I do a 1000 grit polish every Sunday morning (takes about 20 minutes). Anyone else have a close call that made them overhaul their gear habits?
