TIL a $60 card reader at a farmer's market saved my weekend sales but then the fees ate my profit

Last Saturday I sold at the Riverside market and only had cash. People kept walking when they saw the ATM line. So I grabbed one of those Square readers for $60 at the big box store. It worked great, maybe 20 sales in two hours. But I didn't check the per transaction fee until Sunday. That $60 plus 2.6% on every sale meant I basically broke even on my smaller items. Has anyone else dealt with this fee creep when you're just trying to make a few bucks on the side? Do the flat rate plans actually make sense for low volume sellers?
