I was tracking my spending wrong for years without knowing it

I always just looked at my bank account at the end of the month and felt okay, but I never knew where the money actually went. The tip-off was when my friend in Seattle asked me how much I spent on groceries last year and I had no clue. I started using a free app called Mint to sort every single purchase, and I found out I was spending almost $75 a week just on coffee and snacks. Has anyone else had a moment like this that made them switch up their whole tracking method?

Showerthought: everyone says to use a password manager, but I went with a physical notebook for my main accounts.

After my phone bricked last week and I was locked out of everything for 8 hours, I realized I needed a backup that doesn't rely on a single device or service, so I keep my 15 most important passwords in a small book in a locked drawer at home. Has anyone else chosen a low-tech backup over going all-in on a digital manager?

The way people set up their brake calipers before tightening the bolts is a real problem

I saw a customer bring in a bike with a rubbing disc brake, and they had just squeezed the lever while tightening the mounting bolts. This forces the caliper into a bad spot. I had to loosen the bolts, recenter the caliper by hand, and then tighten it down without touching the lever. Why do so many folks think squeezing the lever helps? Has anyone else had to fix this same mistake a bunch of times?

My old foreman in Tampa always said to check the ground first on weird electrical gremlins

I spent an hour on a 2018 F-150's flickering dash lights before remembering his advice, and sure enough, it was a corroded chassis ground behind the left front wheel well. Anyone have a favorite method for cleaning and protecting those connections?

Our outside counsel kept missing a key deadline for document production.

The problem was they needed to review over 15,000 emails from a specific executive in Atlanta. I suggested we use a simple keyword filter for 'budget' and 'approval' first, before the full review. This cut the initial batch down to about 2,000 emails that were actually relevant. It saved us a week and kept the court schedule on track. Has anyone else used a basic filter like this to speed up early discovery?

I was torquing those little AN3 bolts way too hard for years

I was doing a 100-hour inspection on a Cessna 172 last week, and the new guy at the shop asked why I was using the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench on the cowling fasteners. I told him that's how I'd always done it. He pulled out the spec sheet and showed me the 1/4-inch drive setting... I'd been cranking them down to almost double the proper inch-pounds without even realizing. It just felt normal to me. Has anyone else had a basic habit like that they had to unlearn?
