I was tracking my spending wrong for years without knowing it

I always just looked at my bank account at the end of the month and felt okay, but I never knew where the money actually went. The tip-off was when my friend in Seattle asked me how much I spent on groceries last year and I had no clue. I started using a free app called Mint to sort every single purchase, and I found out I was spending almost $75 a week just on coffee and snacks. Has anyone else had a moment like this that made them switch up their whole tracking method?

What finally made you start checking your purchases? For me it was seeing how much I spent on takeout. I just wrote down every single thing I bought for a month in a notebook, no app. It was boring but it showed me where the leaks were.

Notice how small daily buys quietly drain our savings more than big purchases ever could.

My friend had a real wake up call when her car needed new brakes. She swore she had enough saved, but her account was basically empty. Turns out she was dropping like fifty bucks a week on fancy coffee and smoothies without even noticing. Writing it all down was a pain, but she saw the pattern right away. Now she makes coffee at home and that brake fund is actually growing, lol.
