My entire digital map file corrupted right before a big deadline

I was finishing a commission for a fantasy novel map, about 20 hours of work in, when my computer crashed. When I rebooted and opened the file in my usual program, it was just a garbled mess of pixels. This happened two nights ago. I tried every recovery trick I knew, but the main file was toast. I had to rebuild the coastlines from a week-old sketch I'd luckily emailed to myself. Has anyone else had a digital map disaster and found a reliable way to back up work in progress?

Honestly, I used to just save to my desktop and call it a day. A corrupted project file for a client logo a few years back changed my whole system. Now I use a cloud drive that auto-saves every few minutes, plus I manually save a new version, like "map_v2.3", at the end of every work session. It feels like overkill until you need it.

Losing 20 hours on a fantasy map sounds like a nightmare. Jamies45 has the right idea with that auto-save cloud drive.
