Found a weird fact about old Maytag washers in a library book

Yeah, those old agitator dogs were basically indestructible. It's because they were made from a specific type of nylon that was oil-impregnated from the factory, so it self-lubricated for its whole life. Modern ones use cheaper plastic that just grinds itself to dust. The real kicker is that the part was so simple, just a couple of lugs, that there was nothing to really fail. They built things to last back then because they expected you to fix them, not throw the whole machine out. Makes you wonder what other simple designs we've lost in the name of cost cutting.

I bought a cheap star tracker and it cost me a whole night of shooting

That clutch upgrade is a bit overhyped in my opinion. It still slips under a heavier lens, which is a real pain during a long session. The polar scope issue just adds to the hassle for the money.

My brother told me to run 87 octane in my 5.0 F-150 for years, and I think he was wrong

Ever notice how the truck just feels more alive with premium? My old Silverado was the same way. Ran on 87 for years because the manual said it was fine, but it always felt a bit lazy. Switched to 91 and it was like a different truck, way more pep pulling out onto the highway. I did the math and the better mileage almost paid for the price jump. Your brother isn't totally wrong, but the computer in these newer trucks can actually use that better gas. You were for sure leaving some power on the table.

Spent a whole weekend trying to get a model to stop giving weird answers

My first chatbot project ended every single response with "I hope this helps," even when it was clearly giving wrong information about movie times. I had to go back through thousands of training examples to find where that pattern started. It took me two full weekends of cleaning data before it finally stopped. The model just decides it found a perfect closing line and clings to it forever.

I was wrong about that $80 hot air rework station I bought last year

My cheap station came with a nozzle that looks like it was made from a soda can, lmao. I tried to use it on a tiny SMD part and ended up just blasting the whole board with a tornado of hot air. Found a decent set of smaller tips on that big online auction site for like fifteen bucks. They're not perfect but they actually focus the heat now instead of trying to melt my entire workbench.
