My old Xbox 360 went from a jet engine to library quiet in about two hours

I finally got around to opening up my launch model 360 that's been sitting in the closet for years. The fan noise was so loud you could hear it over the game audio. I took it apart, cleaned out a huge dust bunny the size of a quarter from the heatsink, and replaced the old thermal paste with some fresh Arctic MX-4 I had left over from a PC build. The difference is night and day. It's been running for a week now and I can barely hear it. Has anyone else had success with just a deep clean fixing older console noise, or is a fan replacement usually the next step?

A fence in the park made me rethink post spacing

I was walking my dog at Miller Park yesterday and stopped to look at a long wooden fence along the creek. The posts were set about 9 feet apart, and the whole middle section was sagging like a tired smile. It was clear the weight of the rails and the wet ground had gotten to it. I stood there for a minute and realized I've been sticking to the old 8-foot rule without thinking about the soil or the rail weight. Has anyone else adjusted their post spacing for really wet ground or heavy composite rails?

Showerthought: A client in Denver asked for a 'hard part' but his hair growth went the wrong way

I was lining him up with my trimmer and saw his natural part grew straight back from his forehead, not to the side. I had to choose between forcing the line against the grain or talking him into a different style. I showed him in the mirror how it would look and he went with a softer textured part instead. Has anyone else had to talk a client out of a cut that just wouldn't work with their hair?

Showerthought: I was wrong about how much waste carpet padding creates

I was cleaning out my truck after a job in Tacoma and weighed all the old pad scraps. It came to 85 pounds from just one 400 square foot install. I looked it up later and read that padding makes up about 15% of landfill waste from carpet jobs. I always figured the carpet itself was the main issue. Has anyone found a good way to recycle this stuff locally, or is it just trash for you too?

I thought those overnight bus rides across Europe were just for broke students

Took one from Berlin to Prague to save on a hotel, and the $25 ticket got me a decent seat and saved a full day for sightseeing. Anyone have other routes where this actually works well?

Tried using a magnet to find a broken wire in a Maytag washer motor and it actually worked

The motor was shorting intermittently, and a small fridge magnet stuck right where the insulation was rubbed through on a lead. Anyone else have a weird trick for finding shorts?
