A parking lot fridge repair changed my whole compressor testing routine
Last month I got a call about a busted mini fridge at a flea market in Tucson. The guy said it was just warm inside, no big deal. I get there, and the compressor is running but the condenser coil is caked with dust and dog hair, I mean packed solid. I cleaned it out, checked the amp draw, and it pulled way lower than the label said, which I usually ignore. That made me think, I've been testing compressors the same way for 10 years, just checking for continuity and voltage. Now I bring a clamp meter to every no-cool call and compare live amp draw to the spec plate before I tell anyone they need a new compressor. It's saved me from swapping three units that just needed a serious coil cleaning. Has anyone else caught a false compressor failure this way, or am I the only one who skipped the basics for too long?
