Pro tip: Look at reuse centers for building stuff, seriously
I used to think they only had broken items and trash. After grabbing some solid oak boards for a bookshelf project, I saw how much good material gets tossed. Now I tell all my DIY pals to check there first, lmao.

Spend an afternoon digging through warped lumber and mystery plywood just to find one usable piece. Half the stuff has hidden water damage or questionable coatings you don't want in your house. The selection is totally random, so you can't plan a project around what they might have. You end up wasting more gas and time than you save on materials.

Sure, it can be a hassle, but isn't part of the fun the hunt itself? You save a ton of money compared to buying new lumber, and sometimes you stumble upon amazing vintage pieces with character that big box stores never have. Plus, you're keeping materials out of landfills, which feels good. After a few trips, you learn how to spot the good stuff faster. How can you put a price on that sense of discovery?

Honestly, I get both sides. My trick is calling ahead before I make the trip. I ask what kind of lumber they got in recently. Saves me from showing up when it's just scraps. I also bring a tape measure and a small square to check stuff right there. Found some perfect maple for a desk leg last month that way. You gotta be picky, but it works.
