Is it better to learn a cheap hobby the "right" way first or just wing it?

I was talking to my buddy Dave last week while we were trying to fix up an old bike with zip ties and duct tape. He said I should watch a tutorial first, but I argued that figuring stuff out on your own is half the fun and saves you from spending money on tools you might not need. Now I'm second guessing myself because his way might mean less mistakes and less wasted materials. What do you all think, do you jump in blind or plan ahead when you're broke?

Picked a hands-on demo over a fancy presentation at a vendor summit last month

Had to choose between a polished slide deck from a big ERP vendor or a messy live demo from a smaller SaaS company in Portland. The live demo crashed twice, but the CEO actually jumped in to fix it himself which told me more about their team than any slide could. Has anyone else made a gut call like that that ended up changing how you pick partners?

A homeowner watched me mud for 20 minutes then asked if I could just paint over the tape instead

Had a guy in Elmhurst last week tell me he saw his brother-in-law skip the mud and just paint right over drywall tape because it hides the seam, and he wanted me to do the same thing on his $4,500 basement job - how do you explain to someone that mud is actually doing something?

That Saturday where the key issue I hunted for 6 months finally showed up

I had been looking for a beat up copy of Amazing Spider-Man #300 for months to fill a gap in my run. Last Saturday I walked into my local shop in Portland and the owner Tom had just pulled one out of a collection buy. I didn't even haggle on the 40 dollar price tag because the cover was still attached and the pages were clean. Has anyone else had that random day where a long wanted book just appears out of nowhere?

Pro tip: Stop using the same password for everything

I used to just rotate between three passwords for all my accounts until my email got hacked last month and they got into my Amazon, Netflix, and even my bank. After that I spent an afternoon setting up Bitwarden and now every single login has a unique random password. Has anyone else had a wake-up call like this that finally got them to use a password manager?

Found a roman coin in my grandfather's old tackle box after he passed

I was clearing out my granddad's garage last summer up near Buffalo, New York, and came across this beat up old tackle box from the 1970s. Inside, mixed in with rusty hooks and old lures, was this small copper colored coin that looked way older than anything else in there. I figured it was just some old foreign change he picked up on a trip, but I took it to a local history museum anyway. The curator got all excited and said it was a Roman bronze coin from around 340 AD, probably from the reign of Constantine II. It must have sat in that box for decades without anyone realizing what it was. Now I'm wondering how many other people have found random artifacts in their family's old stuff and just tossed them out. Has anyone else pulled something historic out of a relative's junk pile without knowing what you had at first?

Built a custom bookshelf with dado joints and the whole thing racked sideways

Spent 3 days on a maple bookshelf for a client in Austin. Laid out all my dados with a router and jig, glued it up, and when I stood it up the whole frame was a parallelogram. Learned I forgot to account for the slight wobble in my workbench surface. Anyone else have a project that looked perfect flat but fell apart vertically?

Lost $60 on a guidebook that was 4 years out of date for the PCT

Picked up a used PCT guidebook at a gear swap for cheap, but half the water caches and campsites listed were gone or moved. Had to rely on strangers at Kennedy Meadows to re-route me. Anyone else get burned by outdated beta?

Old timer at the shop taught me something about beef tenderloin I still use

Back when I was working at a small shop in Pittsburgh about 10 years ago, there was this guy named Frank who must have been 70. He showed me how to feel for the chain muscle on a tenderloin with your thumb instead of looking for it. Said he learned it in the 60s and never cut one wrong since. I still use that trick every time I break down a whole tenderloin. Any of you old timers got a simple trick like that you picked up from someone?

Digging post holes used to be a whole different animal back in 95

I remember my first summer with the crew in Omaha, we dug every hole with a two man clamshell digger. My arms would be screaming by lunch. Now we use a one man gas auger and I can sink a 4 foot hole in about 3 minutes flat. The change happened around 2008 when we finally bought a Honda powered unit from the local rental place. No more fighting clay with a hand digger for 20 minutes per hole. Has anyone else gone back to hand digging for a specific soil type or are you all on the powered stuff now?
