I thought the 'secret menu' at that new taco spot was just a hype thing

A buddy told me to ask for the 'al pastor estilo DF' at the place on 3rd Street, which isn't listed. I was sure they'd just give me the regular al pastor. I tried it last Friday and it came with grilled pineapple and a different salsa, way better. It's a real thing they make if you know to ask. Has anyone else found a good off-menu item around town?

I always thought dried beans were too much work until I heard a tip at the library

I was at the Denver Public Library last month and overheard a lady say she cooks a whole bag of pinto beans in her slow cooker overnight, no soaking needed. I tried it with a two pound bag that cost me $1.89, and now I have beans for chili, soups, and burritos for the whole week. Who knew skipping the soak step could make them so easy? What other cheap slow cooker meals save you the most time?

I used to think power trowels were just for big crews until I tried one on a 400 sq ft garage floor

For years, I stuck with a hand trowel for everything under 1000 square feet, thinking a power trowel was overkill and a hassle for small jobs. My buddy in Phoenix kept telling me I was wasting time and energy. Last month, I had a single-car garage pour, about 400 square feet, and decided to rent a Whiteman walk-behind just to shut him up. I was sure it would be too aggressive and mess up the finish. Man, was I wrong. It cut my finishing time in half and gave me a way smoother, more even surface than I could get by hand, even on my knees. The control was fine enough to handle the edges without issue. Now I'm rethinking my whole approach to small slabs. For those of you who do a mix of big and small jobs, do you use a power trowel every time, or do you still draw a line somewhere?

Okay I was totally wrong about how fast mountains form

I used to think mountain building was this super slow, steady process over millions of years. But I was reading a paper from the University of Utah last week about the Himalayas, and it said some of the big uplift events can happen in bursts over just a few thousand years. That's basically overnight in geologic time. It matters because it changes how we think about erosion and climate patterns tied to those rapid changes. I feel like a lot of people still have the old 'slow and steady' idea stuck in their heads. Has anyone else seen newer research on this kind of pulsed uplift in other ranges?

A trip to the art museum made me rethink how I explain extractions

I was at the Getty Center yesterday and overheard a guide describe a painting's layers with such patience and detail. It hit me that I should explain the skin's layers and congestion the same way to my clients, not just rush through the 'why' before the 'how'.

Rant: I found a Genesis classic and the seller had no clue

Honestly, I was digging through a bin at a yard sale and pulled out 'Ristar' for the Sega Genesis. Tbh, the guy running the sale thought it was just some junk cart from the 90s. Ngl, it hit me how fast these games slip out of public memory. I used to play it with my cousin all the time, but now most folks don't recognize the name. We gotta keep sharing stories about these old games or they'll vanish for good.
