Question about a horse's hoof angle after switching to a different anvil

I've been using the same old anvil from my granddad's shop for years, but last month I switched to a new 150 lb Peddinghaus. The difference in how I can shape a shoe is wild. I had a client's quarter horse in yesterday, and after three shoes, I realized I was getting a much cleaner 55-degree angle on the toe than I ever could before. Has anyone else noticed their work getting sharper just from a better anvil?

Rant: I tried to fact-check a moon landing hoax video for my cousin and it totally backfired

My cousin sent me this hour-long video last week, one of those 'definitive proofs' the Apollo missions were faked. He knows I like digging into stuff, so I figured I'd watch it and calmly pick apart the bad points. I spent a whole evening, paused it a bunch, and wrote down notes with timestamps from NASA's own archives to counter each claim. When I sent him my breakdown, he didn't even read it. He just said, 'See, you're working so hard to defend it, that proves they got something to hide.' I learned that for some people, the act of you trying to debunk something is just more evidence for their side. It's not about the facts at all, it's about the feeling. Has anyone else had a family member just completely shut down when you actually put in the work to look something up?

Warning: My new apprentice tried to use a pipe wrench on a boiler gauge last week

We were on a job in Toledo and he thought the pressure reading was stuck, so he gave it a good crank and the whole glass face popped out like a cork. I spent the next hour calming down the site manager and explaining we needed a whole new assembly. Has anyone else had a helper do something that made you just shake your head?

My buddy in Seattle said to skip the plate foam and just use the case foam for a softer typing feel.

I was building a Mode Sonnet and he told me that the stock case foam was enough to get a deep sound without making the board feel too stiff. I tried it and honestly, the board felt way too hollow and pingy, even with silent switches. I should have just ordered the plate foam from the start. Has anyone else had a Mode board turn out too loud without the extra foam layer?

I used to think our book club's voting system was fine, but last month's pick changed my mind

We read 'The Midnight Library' because it won a simple majority vote, but half our group in Austin hated it. The debate got so bad two people almost quit. I'm now convinced we need ranked choice voting for our next pick to avoid another split. Has your club ever switched how you choose books?

Found a 1990s wiring diagram for a nav system and it looked like a kid drew it

I was digging through old files at the hangar and pulled out a paper manual for a GNS 430 from like 1995. The wiring diagram was all hand-drawn with pencil, super messy, and someone had written "good luck" in the corner. Back then, I guess you just had to trace every line and hope for the best. Now I pull up the digital manual on my tablet, zoom in, and have the exact pinouts in two seconds. The old way felt like solving a puzzle with half the pieces missing. Anyone else find these ancient docs and just laugh?

Showerthought: I keep seeing people pressure wash old barn wood before using it.

That strips away all the character and history, the weathered gray patina is the whole point! Has anyone else found a better way to clean found wood without ruining the look?

Finally got that old farmhouse flue liner in after a full day of fighting it

Got a call for a 1920s brick chimney in Millbrook that hadn't been touched in decades. The clay liner was shot, so I went to put in a new stainless steel one. The old mortar had crumbled and fallen into the space, creating a solid block about eight feet down. Had to chip it out piece by piece with a hammer and chisel from the roof. What I thought was a three hour job turned into a solid eight. Anyone else run into a liner just completely packed with old debris?

My old post vise cracked at the jaw hinge during a heavy twisting job

It happened yesterday while I was trying to straighten a stubborn piece of 1/2 inch square stock. The cast iron just gave out with a loud snap. I had to stop everything and clamp the piece in my bench vise to finish. Anyone have a good source for a solid replacement, maybe from a specific supplier like Centaur Forge?

Just realized I spent 4 hours on a single stair tread yesterday...

Had a job in an old house with these weird, uneven concrete steps. The first tread had a big dip in the middle, maybe half an inch deep. I thought I could just pad it out with extra cushion... but the carpet kept wrinkling every time I tried to stretch it. Ended up having to cut a custom plywood shim to fit the exact shape, glue it down, and wait for it to set before I could even start the real install. What's your go-to fix for a sloped step that's not wood?
