inMy foreman in Phoenix pointed out my mortar bed was too thick for a 12-inch block, and I'd been doing it that way for months.
Nah, sometimes you just gotta trust your gut. My uncle never measures anything and his stuff holds up fine. Maybe your dad just got unlucky, @rivera.henry.

inCan we talk about how much faster a new bender made my conduit runs?
Totally get that. Upgraded my old corded hammer drill to a newer brushless model last year. The difference in speed driving screws into concrete is night and day. My arm doesn't feel like jelly at the end of the day anymore. Sometimes you don't realize how much a tool is holding you back until you try the new version.

inWatch out for that cheap padding underlay from the big box stores
My friend works at a furniture store and says the display models often have extra screws and glue you don't get in the box. They build them to last just long enough for you to buy it. What's a good way to check for that before you take it home?

inCan we talk about those new Samsung ice makers that fail after a year?
Three replacements in a week sounds like a feature, not a bug. Samsung must be trying to guarantee job security for appliance techs. It's a pretty lousy business model for everyone else, though.
