My neighbor's toast was a lost cause until I swapped one capacitor
My neighbor was ready to toss their toaster because it wouldn't heat up. I opened it, found one blown capacitor, replaced it for like fifty cents, and now it works fine. How come folks ditch stuff without even trying a basic fix first?

My local repair guy showed me how cheap some fixes are.

Seriously? That's huge. What kinds of fixes? Like a phone screen or a laptop battery? I always assume that stuff costs a fortune. Give us an example of what was way cheaper than you thought.

Right, exactly the kind of stuff you mentioned. @fionas39 has the right idea. My old laptop wouldn't hold a charge and I was ready to buy a new one. The repair shop quoted me forty bucks for a new battery and had it done in an hour. The markup on those parts is tiny compared to what a big store tells you it costs. It makes you wonder what else we're all overpaying for because we don't ask.
