A local in Medellin insisted I get a local SIM card instead of relying on my international plan.

Used to think local SIM cards were a hassle. That $180 bill in Costa Rica changed my mind real quick. Best tip you ever got from someone who lives there?

Found a weird trick for taping inside corners from a 1970s trade manual

Sounds like a great way to grow mold in your walls. That damp paper is just asking for trouble, especially if you live somewhere humid. Modern mud is designed to work with dry tape for a reason. You're just adding an extra step that can cause bigger problems down the road.

Switched from hand sanding to a dual action polisher for clear coat blending and won't go back

Man, I get it. My arms used to be dead after a full day of trying to blend by hand. That old-school block sanding on a curved door edge was the worst, always left a visible line. Seeing that 3M demo must have been a game changer. I still keep a hand block for super tight spots, but the polisher saves so much time and grief.

I spent $300 on a fancy moisture meter and it was a total waste for most jobs

Wait, you spent three hundred bucks on that thing? That's a whole different level of commitment. I can't believe the readings jump around so much on the same slab, that sounds like a nightmare to deal with. It makes total sense that just looking at the place and knowing its story gets you further most days. Do you ever use it now, or is it just collecting dust in the truck?

Update: I picked the shorter loop in the Smokies last weekend and it was a good call

Smart move picking the lower route. When the weather turns, elevation is your real enemy. For a solid three day trip that can handle rain, look at the Big Creek area on the NC side. You can basecamp at site 37, it's in a valley but on high ground, so you stay dry. That lets you do day hikes up to Mt. Sterling or down the creek without having to break camp in a downpour. The old logging roads give you bailout options if a stream gets too high.
