TIL about the 'digital nomad tax' in Lisbon

I've been in Lisbon for about three weeks now and just got a real surprise on my cafe bill. A place in the Principe Real neighborhood added a 1 euro 'service charge' to my coffee because I was working on my laptop. The manager said it's becoming common in busy areas to charge remote workers for taking up a table for hours. I only bought a 2 euro espresso, so that's a 50% increase. Has anyone else run into these kinds of fees in other cities, and how do you handle it?

What's stopping them from charging everyone for table time?

Just ask for the fee policy before you sit down.
