Serious question, is it better to ask for a raise or wait for a yearly review?
I was told to wait for my annual review, but after hitting my sales goal three months early, I asked my boss directly. He gave me a 5% bump on the spot. Should you always wait for the formal process, or speak up when you have proof you did a good job?

Oh come on, you got lucky. That 5% bump probably came out of a different budget than your annual review money. Most companies structure raises around the review cycle for a reason. If you ask early, you might get a smaller bump than you'd get if you waited and showed a full year of results. Plus, now your boss might feel like he already gave you something and not go to bat for you when the real review comes around. My buddy asked for a raise three months before review and got 4%, then got passed over for the 10% everyone else got during the actual cycle because they "already addressed his compensation." That math hurts.

Good for you for speaking up. I always say you have to be your own biggest cheerleader at work. Waiting for a review means your good work from months ago is old news. They budget for raises all year, not just at review time. Bringing solid proof like you did is the smart move. I did the same thing years back and never regretted it.
