Rant: Should we really be mixing mortar by feel or is that just old school pride?

I watched a crew at a site in Cleveland last Thursday eyeball their mix and the wall looked solid, but I've always been told you gotta measure everything precise. Does instinct with sand and cement beat the numbers or are we just asking for cracks down the road?

Eyeball their mix" - that's how you get walls that look good now but fail inspection later. I've seen too many spot repairs from guys who thought they had the feel. Measuring is cheap insurance.

Gotta agree with @beth_baker69 on this one - measuring is cheap insurance, but the real issue nobody's talking about is how consistent your sand is. That load from a different quarry can throw off your "feel" completely, especially if you're used to a specific source. One bad batch of damp sand and your eyeball mix turns to dust in a year or two.
