Got called out by a homeowner for my messy mortar joints on a Friday job

I was repointing a chimney in Oak Park last month and this retired mason walking his dog stopped to tell me my joints looked like a toddler did them. He was right too, and now I spend an extra 15 minutes cleaning each course with a stiff brush before the mortar sets.

Yeah the extra time is worth it. A clean joint makes the whole job look professional. Plus that retired guy might actually recommend you if you fix your work.

Funny enough, I saw a guy once who spent an hour sanding down a joint that nobody would ever see, just because he knew the homeowner was a stickler for details. Ended up getting three more jobs from that one street.
