Vent: My book club in Austin argued about a character for 45 minutes straight

We were discussing 'The Goldfinch' at my local coffee shop last Tuesday, and one member kept insisting Boris was just a bad friend. I had him pegged as a tragic figure shaped by his past. Hearing everyone's different takes, especially from a teacher who compared him to students she's had, totally flipped my view. Now I go into meetings at work trying to see the 'why' behind people's actions, not just what they do. Has your club ever changed how you see people in real life?

Book clubs just give you better excuses for overthinking people.

That's the whole point though. You get to pick apart characters like real people, which is way more fun than doing it to your actual friends. It's practice for being a nosy jerk in a safe space.

So what's your real problem with analyzing fictional people?
