I saw a barber in Chicago handle a tough client with just a story and a comb

It was at the Midwest Barber Expo maybe five years back. I was watching a demo on skin fades, but the real lesson happened off stage. This older guy, maybe in his 60s, had a client who kept moving his head and complaining. Instead of getting mad, the barber just stopped, put his comb down, and started telling a story about learning to cut hair in his dad's shop. He talked about how his dad said a steady hand comes from a calm mind, not from forcing someone to stay still. He kept talking in this easy voice while he finished the cut, and the client totally relaxed. It wasn't about the tool, it was about the talk. I went home and tried that 'story first' approach with my own jumpy clients, and it works way better than just saying 'hold still'. Anyone else find that a little chat changes the whole vibe in the chair?

Honestly, that's so true. Tbh, a good story just makes people forget they're even stressed.

Yeah, a good story can smooth out any rough patch.

Totally agree with you, @phoenixh74. I was just reading about how some companies use storytelling in their training to help people deal with tough customer service calls. It's not about making stuff up, but framing the situation in a way that builds a connection first. That shift in approach can turn a complaint into a cooperative fix. Makes you wonder how many daily arguments are just missing a good opening story, right?
