Rant: My kid asked why I fix things instead of buying new ones and it got me quiet.

He said, 'Dad, isn't it easier to just get a new one from the store?' and for the first time I couldn't just say it's about saving money, it's about knowing the thing inside and out, you know?

Know that feeling. My kid saw me spend three hours fixing a toaster and asked if I was broke. Had to explain it's not about the money, it's about the tiny victory when you finally get the stupid spring back in place. That old thing has history, and now I know exactly which wire is a little loose. Buying a new one just feels like giving up.

Right? That feeling when it finally clicks into place is the best. It's like you beat the thing at its own game. Plus now you know its secrets for next time.
