Heard a guy at the parts counter say he just replaces the whole control board on every dryer that comes in, no testing.

That's the kind of repair logic that puts a $400 control board in a dryer that just needed a $5 thermal fuse. My local shop had a guy like that, and his ticket averages were insane. It's pure laziness disguised as efficiency, and the customer pays for it every single time. You don't fix things by just throwing the most expensive part at every problem.

Reminds me of a shop that billed for a whole new compressor. Found the old one in the dumpster with just a bad relay.

And that's the problem right there, @nathan851. A lot of these shops figure the customer won't know any better, so they just swap the whole unit instead of taking the time to actually diagnose it. It's not just about the cost of the part, it's the labor and the mark-up that really adds up. I've seen people pay hundreds for a job that should have been a simple fix, and it makes my blood boil. You're right, it's pure laziness dressed up as professionalism. They get away with it because most folks don't have the tools or know-how to double-check their work.
