My credit card auto pay glitched and I caught it at a gas station in Tulsa

I was filling up on Route 66 last Tuesday and decided to check my bank app on a whim. Saw a $1,200 payment didn't go through and the late fee was already pending. Called my card company right there at the pump and got the fee waived, plus they sent me a reminder alert for next time. Has anyone else had a close call like that with autopay?

Overheard a VC say 'personality is irrelevant in B2B sales' and I had to walk away

I was grabbing coffee near my shop in Cleveland and overheard this investor guy telling someone that B2B buyers only care about features and price, not who they're talking to. Made me think about all the times I've landed a contract just because I was honest about a timeline or cracked a joke when things got stressful. Has anyone else seen deals turn on just being a normal human?

The farmer at the feed store swore I was overwatering my tomatoes

He said 'stick your finger in 2 inches deep and if it's damp, walk away' and I fought him on it for a month until my plants got root rot and now I just poke the dirt like a maniac, has anyone else had to learn the hard way that less water is more?

Burned a steak so bad it fused to the pan last Tuesday

I preheated my 12-inch Lodge on high like I always do, tossed on a ribeye, and within 30 seconds the smoke alarm was screaming. The entire kitchen at my place in Austin filled with smoke so thick I couldn't see the stove. By the time I got it off the heat, the steak was stuck solid like it was welded on. Had to boil water in the pan for 10 minutes just to scrape it off with a wooden spoon. Anyone else ever have a pan get so hot it practically bonded with the food?

Just realized my light meter was toast for 3 months

I kept wondering why all my rolls came back underexposed. Finally brought my old Sekonic to the camera shop on a whim and the guy laughed. Said it was reading a full stop and a half off. Now I'm using the Sunny 16 rule and honestly getting better results than I ever did with that broken meter. Has anyone else had a meter go bad slowly like that?

Finally had a perfect composting week after 4 months of trial and error

I live in a 500 sq ft studio in Chicago and my worm bin has been a disaster for almost half a year with fruit flies and smell. Last Tuesday I switched to a layered system with shredded newspaper and frozen scraps and it actually worked no flies no stink. Has anyone else tried freezing scraps before adding them to their bin?

Rant: Tried a plasma cutter on a 1-inch boiler plate and got a mess

I figured I'd save time cutting a thick section of steel for a repair last week. Fired up my Hypertherm 45XP and went at it with what I thought was the right settings. Ended up with a rough cut full of dross and had to spend two hours grinding it clean. Learned that for heavy plate like that, old-school oxy-fuel is still the better call. Any of you guys had a similar experience switching tools on thick sections?

Was skeptical about ultrasonic cleaners for small appliance parts, now I'm converted

I never thought a $120 ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor Freight would actually make a difference, but after I ran a circuit board from a dead microwave in there with some Simple Green, it started working again. A guy in a forum told me to try it after I spent 3 hours chasing a ghost short, and now I use the thing every week for gas valve parts and control boards. Anyone else have a tool they were totally against at first but now rely on?

Hot take: WD40 isnt the fix for sticky guide rails

Spent three hours last Tuesday wrestling with a car that kept jerking on the fifth floor at an office building downtown. Threw some silicone spray on the rails as a last try because the old timers swore by it, and it actually smoothed everything out. Any of you guys switched from WD40 to something else and seen better results?

Rant: Is it lazy writing or just efficient when a show reuses the same flashback three times in one season?

I just read a breakdown on TV Tropes that claimed The Walking Dead reused the same Shane-Rick barn scene in 4 different episodes across season 2 and I'm wondering if that's a storytelling shortcut or if viewers just don't notice with good editing - which side are you on?

Wasted $80 on a bulk roll of expired film from a random seller on Ebay

No way, $80 for a roll of film that's completely ruined?! That's just brutal, especially with that purple mess ruining every frame. I've been there buying old stock and it's always a gamble, but that price tag for a single roll is insane. People really need to stop pricing expired film like it's some kind of gold mine when it's just trash. Hopefully you can get Ebay to step in and refund you because that's just not okay.

My $15 thrift store banjo finally snapped a string and I have no idea how to restring it

Took 3 days to arrive" - man, I gotta say, is it really that serious? You snapped one string on a fifteen dollar banjo from Goodwill. That's like being mad that a beater car you bought for 500 bucks blew a tire. The peg threading stuff linda_clark mentioned might be true for some cheap instruments, but honestly you might just have gotten a bad string or put it on wrong. I've done the same thing with a yard sale acoustic - snapped the high E and sat there feeling like a failure until I realized I could buy a whole pack of strings for six bucks. Take a breath, watch a YouTube video, and try again. If it breaks again, you're out fifteen bucks and you got a month of messing around with it out of the deal.
