My balcony aphid invasion taught me to question companion planting dogma.
I followed advice to plant marigolds for natural pest control, but it backfired. After research, I realized companion planting isn't foolproof and switched to integrated pest management. What unconventional solutions have you tried when standard practices failed?

Stubbornly cling to companion planting but with a more strategic approach. My nasturtiums became an aphid magnet too, but that was the point they lured them away from my beans and attracted ladybugs for a free feast. Sometimes the "failure" is just the system working as intended, just not how we pictured it.

Oh, that reminds me of my attempt with marigolds last season. I planted a ring of them around my tomatoes hoping to deter nematodes, but they ended up covered in whiteflies. Turns out the whiteflies preferred the marigolds so much they left the tomatoes alone, which was a win even if it looked messy. I had to hose down the marigolds every few days, but the tomato yield was fantastic.

Exactly! Nasturtiums lure aphids, beans thrive.
