A senior designer told me to stop using more than three fonts in a layout, and I should have listened.

He gave me that advice on a project for a local cafe's menu six months ago. I thought using five different typefaces would make it look creative and fun. The client took one look and said it was messy and hard to read, so I had to redo the whole thing in two days. Sticking to just two fonts for headings and body text made everything cleaner and the client loved the second version. Has anyone else gotten pushback from a client for going overboard with fonts?

Oh man, that's such a classic lesson to learn the hard way. I mean, we've all been there, trying to get fancy and then it just ends up looking like a mess. Sticking to two or three fonts really does force you to be more creative with size and spacing instead. Glad the redo worked out.

But what if the mess is the point? Some of my favorite designs break that rule on purpose.
