Hot take: I used to ignore screen protector reviews until my phone fell off the kitchen counter.

My old phone had a cheap film protector for about a year, and it was always scratched and bubbly. Last month, my new phone slipped and hit the tile floor screen-first. I was sure it was done for. But I had just put on a tempered glass one I saw recommended in a few videos... and not a single crack. The protector shattered, but the actual screen underneath was perfect. It cost like $15 for a two-pack. The difference between that and the flimsy film is night and day. Now I actually watch those drop test reviews before I buy anything. Has anyone else had a protector actually save their phone from a bad drop?

Honestly my phone's fine without any protector at all.

Placebo plastic" is the perfect name for those things. I had one that bubbled up so bad it looked like a topographical map. The tempered glass ones are basically a tiny airbag for your screen.

Saw a tech writer call cheap film protectors "placebo plastic" once, which feels about right. They're good for light scratches and that's it. The tempered glass ones actually spread out the impact force. It's wild how a piece of glass can crack in a spiderweb but keep the real screen safe. My partner's phone survived a drop from a bike mount the same way. That sound of it hitting the pavement still makes me cringe.
