A 1960s dresser I refinished in March went from dull brown to a vibrant honey tone after switching from a standard poly to a water-based amber shellac.
The shellac brought out the original maple grain that the old finish had completely hidden, and now I'm curious if anyone has a good method for testing a finish on hidden wood to see the true color change before committing to a whole piece.

Try it on the inside of a drawer.

I always test on the back of a drawer side, that way the mark is totally hidden if you don't like it.
