My trip to a community garden downtown made me rethink balcony spacing

I visited the Hilltop Community Garden last Saturday and noticed how tightly packed their raised beds were compared to my balcony setup. Some gardeners there swear by close spacing for microclimates but others said it just attracts pests faster. Over in the corner I saw one guy who had tomato plants barely 8 inches apart and they were thriving. Meanwhile I leave a foot between my pepper plants on my 4x6 balcony and wonder if I'm wasting space. What do you all think, are we better off cramming plants closer together or giving them room to breathe?

Hot take: Vintage maps with wrong borders are more interesting than accurate ones

I used to trash any old map I found if it had the wrong country lines. I thought they were useless junk. Then I picked up a 1960s road map of Africa at a thrift store in Chicago for $3. It still showed colonial borders that were gone by 1965. I almost threw it away. But then I realized that map tells a real story about how people saw the world back then, not just where lines were drawn. So now I think the mistakes are actually the best part. Which side are you on, do you value historical accuracy or the weird outdated borders that show a moment in time?

My garage floor epoxy job that looked great for exactly 6 weeks

I spent a whole weekend last spring laying down that fancy epoxy floor coating in my garage. Looked amazing for about 6 weeks, like a showroom floor. Then I parked my car on it after a rainy day and the tire marks just... stayed. Used the heavy degreaser they recommended and it took the shine right off in patches. Anybody had better luck with a different product that actually holds up to daily car parking?

Vent: How I miss working on engines without all the electronics in the way

Last week I was troubleshooting a 2021 Freightliner with a bad sensor and it took me 3 hours just to find the right diagnostic code. I remember 10 years ago when I could pop the hood on a Detroit 60 series and have it figured out in 20 minutes with a wrench and a multimeter. My old mentor used to say 'if it has a computer, it has a headache' and he wasn't wrong. Even basic stuff like oil pressure checks now need a laptop and software updates. Don't get me wrong, I get why they add all this stuff for emissions and efficiency. But has anyone else found themselves spending more time fighting the computer than the actual mechanical problem?

Had a day last week with a Detroit 60 that taught me something new

I was working on this old freight truck from a local dairy, been in the shop before for the usual stuff. Last Tuesday it came in with a weird surging idle, I was about to swap the injectors. Turns out the gear train timing was off by 2 teeth, been like that for probably 100k miles. The old driver said it always ran rough but 'never quit' so they ignored it. Has anyone else found something like that where a simple timing check saved a ton of guesswork?

Finally got approved after 14 months of waiting

Turns out the trick was having my doctor write a specific letter about how one symptom stops me from doing my old job tasks. I was just sending in general reports before and getting denied every time. Anyone else find a specific medical note that actually moved things along?

Fell for a 'good deal' on reman injectors... cost me $600 in lost labor

Bought a set of reman injectors off eBay for a 6.0 Powerstroke back in March. Seller had good ratings, price was half of new. Installed them, truck ran rough, had to pull them all back out and send them back. Two of them were bad out of the box. Lost a weekend and all that time. Anyone else stopped trusting reman parts from online unknowns?

Had to set up my tent in the dark last weekend and it took me almost 45 minutes

Got to the campsite near Lake George way later than planned, like 9:30 PM. Thought I knew my tent well enough to do it by headlamp. Nope. Kept putting poles in the wrong sleeves, the rainfly was backwards twice. Finally just sat down and used my phone to check the instructions like a rookie. Has anybody else found a good trick for speeding up setup when you're fumbling in the dark?

Got talked into a convection vape at the shop, went back to my conduction unit after 2 weeks

The guy at the store said convection was way better for flavor, so I grabbed a Fury Edge last month. But after 2 weeks of not getting big enough clouds (even at 410F) and having to stir the bowl every 3 hits, I pulled out my old Pax 2 again. The Pax gives me thick vapor on the first pull and I don't have to mess with it mid-session. Has anyone else tried a fancy convection vape and gone back to a simpler conduction one?

Hit 500 cassettes in my collection last Saturday and it got me thinking about storage

I was just stacking some new finds from a thrift store in Cleveland and decided to count everything. Ended up at 503 tapes total. Never really kept track before but seeing that number made me realize how fast these things pile up. About 120 of them are still sealed which I guess is cool but also takes up space. Now I'm trying to figure out a better shelving system than the milk crates I've been using. Anyone else hit a milestone count and have to totally rethink their setup?
