Overheard a client at the coffee shop say 'I just need a logo, it should take an hour'

It reminded me why my contract now has a minimum project fee and a detailed scope section. How do you handle clients who don't understand the work involved?

That mindset is everywhere now. People see the final product, not the process. They'll watch a five minute recipe video and think a complex meal takes no time. Same with home repairs or even writing. The work gets invisible. A logo isn't just an hour of drawing. It's the thinking, the revisions, the files. You have to show them the map, not just the destination.

Man, my buddy who does carpentry had a client flip out over a quote for a simple bookshelf. They said, "But it's just a few boards!" He had to explain the measuring, the wood selection, the sanding between coats of finish, and the hardware setup. They only saw the final thing in a picture, not the two days of actual work in the shop.
