My main laptop charger fried itself right before a big deadline

It happened yesterday afternoon while I was finishing a project for a new client in Austin. The charger just sparked and died, leaving me with 12% battery and two hours to go. I had to rush to a cafe, buy a cheap universal charger for $45, and finish the work on their shaky wifi. Has anyone else had a key piece of gear fail at the worst possible time and how did you handle it?

Honestly, my backup plan is just to always have a power bank that can charge my laptop. I learned the hard way after my own charger died during a trip. I bought one that holds about four full charges for my model. It's bulky, but it saved me that one time. Now I keep it in my bag if I know I have a big deadline coming up. It buys you time to find a real outlet without the panic.

That power bank sounds heavy though, my laptop bag is already full of cables and adapters. Honestly I'd rather just find a cafe with outlets and save the weight.

Wait, you finished on 12% and cafe wifi? That's insane.
