My 2018 F-150's cam phaser rattle showed up right at 72,000 miles

It started as a faint knock on cold starts about two months ago, and now it sounds like a bag of rocks for a full 3 seconds every morning. I took it to my local shop in Springfield and they confirmed it, quoting me over $2,800 for the fix. I'm doing the work myself this weekend with a buddy, but it's a huge job. Has anyone else had luck with the aftermarket lockout kits, or should I just stick with the Ford parts?

That cam phaser rattle is like the official soundtrack of the 2010s F-150. Seen so many buddies go through it. Honestly would just stick with the Ford parts, the aftermarket lockouts can get weird.

Wasn't there a big forum thread about how some aftermarket lockout kits mess with the VCT system and throw a code? I remember reading a guy's post where he used a cheap set and his truck ran rough at idle, like it was hunting for the right timing constantly. He ended up pulling it all out and going with the Motorcraft phasers just to make it stop. Seems like that extra cost up front saves a ton of headache later.
