My aunt told me to always cut peony stems underwater

She ran a shop in Spokane for 40 years and swore by it. I finally tried it on a big wedding order last weekend, about 30 stems. They opened perfectly and didn't droop at all, which was a huge relief. Anyone else have a weird old trick that actually works?

Oh man, that's it exactly. It's like there's this whole secret knowledge that comes from just doing something for decades. My grandma would swear by putting a copper penny in a vase of tulips to keep them straight. It sounds nuts, but it works. We're so quick to look up the "right" way online now, but sometimes the best fix is some weird trick passed down from a person who actually did the thing.

Your grandma and @the_skyler are onto something with that penny trick.
