A friend said my solder joints looked like cold oatmeal

I was fixing a 1990s Walkman from my garage and showed him my work. He pointed out the dull, grainy joints and said they'd fail fast, so I watched a video on proper heat control. Anyone know a good iron under fifty bucks for old plastic casings?

Is a shiny solder joint really that important for a Walkman that's been sitting in a garage? I've fixed a ton of old gear with joints that look like garbage and they still work fine years later. As long as the connection is solid and it's not a bridge, it'll probably hold. Your friend might be overstating things for a simple tape player.

Shiny joints mean the solder flowed right. Dull joints can be cold solder, which cracks over time from vibration and heat cycles. A Walkman gets moved around a lot, so those weak points will fail eventually. It's not just about looks, it's about a solid metal bond.

Cold oatmeal? At least it's a hearty breakfast. Maybe he's just mad his joints don't have that rustic charm.
