Talked with a tailor in Chicago who said my fabric choice was all wrong for the pattern I wanted

I was at this little shop on Belmont last weekend picking up thread and got to chatting with the owner, older guy who's been at it for 40 years. I showed him a photo of a blazer I wanted to draft from a pattern I bought online. He looked at the fabric I was holding - a heavy tweed - and just shook his head. Said I'd be fighting the fabric the whole way and the drape would look like a cardboard box. He pointed me to a wool challis instead. I'd never even considered weight vs structure like that before. Has anyone else had a tailor change your whole plan with a single comment?

Wait, did you read that article about how we're all wearing clothes that don't actually fit us? I swear I skimmed a thing online about how most people buy stuff off the rack and it's basically cut for a mannequin, not a real human. It makes a ton of sense now that I think about my own experience. My jacket felt fine in the store but then once I wore it for a few hours, the shoulders just felt off and the sleeves were way too long. I guess they really do have some design that's just average and not for anyone specific. It's a little frustrating when you spend good money on something and it still doesn't fit right.
