Showerthought: My solid anvil base idea cracked under pressure.

I was sure a poured concrete block would handle the shock from shoeing. After finding splits from the hits, I'm trying a thick rubber pad instead. What do you use to soak up the beat from your hammer swings?

Our old farrier swears by a laminated rubber stall mat under the anvil.

Laminated rubber sounds smart. I just used a scrap of old carpet and my anvil still sounds like a church bell, so maybe I need to step up my game.

Thick rubber really does kill the ring and vibration, makes a huge difference for your ears and elbows over time. Seen guys use those industrial stall mats cut to size, sometimes even glue layers together for extra dampening. Protects the floor from getting wrecked too, which is a nice bonus.

My buddy glued layers like that and his anvil went totally silent.
