Had a shoe pull clean off on a big draft horse yesterday

I was finishing up a reset on a Percheron in Oakville when the front left shoe just came off in my hand. It was a size 2 steel shoe I'd just nailed on. I checked the clinches and they were tight, but the hoof wall had some old nail holes that gave out. I had to clean the hoof again and move the nails higher up into solid wall. Has anyone found a good trick for dealing with that kind of blown-out hoof wall?

That's a rough break, and @lisar14 is right about old holes being sneaky.

A size 2 steel shoe just came off in your hand? That's wild. Those things are not light. I'd be so shocked if I felt it just let go. Old nail holes are the worst, they look fine until they're not. I've had some luck packing the old holes with hoof putty before nailing, gives the new nail something to bite into. Moving the nails up is really the only fix once it blows out though.

Yeah, that hoof putty trick is a lifesaver. Old holes are sneaky like that.
