I thought those cheap thermal cameras for phones were a total joke... until I found a short on a board in under 2 minutes.

Come on, that's just pure luck. Those toy cameras have terrible resolution and can't spot a real problem unless it's already on fire. You need a real thermal imager to see small heat differences on a board. That "short" you found was probably a hot component you could have felt with your finger. Those phone gadgets are a waste of money for real work.

Yeah, that's the thing with cheap tech now, it's often way better than you'd guess.
