Warning: Lightweight drywall is a pain to cut without tearing
I've noticed a big shift in the materials we use now. Back in the day, drywall was heavier and more rigid. You had to put effort into cutting it, but it broke clean every time. These new lightweight panels are easy to carry, sure. But when I score them, the paper face often rips instead of snapping. It means more sanding later to fix the edges. Makes me wonder if we're trading quality for convenience.

Scoring lightweight drywall wrong is what causes the tears. You need to press harder on the first cut than with the old stuff. A sharp knife is key, don't use a dull one. It snaps clean if you do it right, just takes some practice.

Tried haydent69's tip but still cracked my drywall last weekend, any tricks?

Is pressing harder really the best move with lightweight drywall? I've seen too much pressure cause the paper to tear out before it snaps. @haydent69, maybe a steady medium score works better than forcing it.
