The mud pan I dropped from 6 feet dented so bad it's unusable now
Last Tuesday I was up on the scaffold finishing a ceiling in a basement on Maple Street and my mud pan slipped out of my hand, hit the concrete floor, and now the bottom is all warped so I can't get a clean edge on any of my joints; has anyone had luck hammering a dented pan back flat or should I just toss it and buy another?

18 gauge works fine for hammering back flat if you just lay it on a piece of 2x4 and give it a few solid whacks. Toss it if it's 22 or 24 gauge though, that thin metal never bounces back right.

Reminds me of when I tried to straighten out some 22 gauge for a gutter patch. Laid it on a block of wood, gave it a good wack with a hammer, and it just bent worse than before. Ended up looking like a crumpled soda can. Friend of mine swears by heating up thinner metal before you try anything, says it relaxes the stress points. Never tried it myself, seems like too much hassle for what it's worth. Usually just grab a fresh piece from the scrap pile if it's that thin.
