Hot take: chainmail scrubbers are worth the hype

I overheard a guy at the farmer's market say they ruin your seasoning, but after 3 months of using one on my lodge pan, the surface is the smoothest it's ever been. Anyone else find chainmail works better than salt scrubs?

After 3 tries I finally figured out why my forge welding kept failing on me

Switched from silica sand to borax for my flux last month and the difference was night and day, first weld stuck like it should have all along. Anyone else have a simple change that fixed a problem you'd been fighting for months?

That $40 brush set I bought online was a complete waste of money

I ordered a 6-piece chimney brush set from some website last month for about $40. The bristles started falling out after my second job and one of the wire handles bent on a straight flue. Has anyone found a decent budget brush that actually holds up for more than a few sweeps?

The lubing mistake everyone makes with their first custom build

So I built my first custom keyboard about 8 months ago and I thought I knew what I was doing with lubing the switches. I bought a little kit with Krytox 205g0 and a brush and just went to town slathering it on every surface I could see. Man, my switches felt like wet noodles after that. Turns out I was putting way too much on the stems and housing walls which killed all the tactile feedback. I had to take apart all 70 switches and clean them with isopropyl alcohol which took me like 4 hours. Now I see people posting their first builds on here with that same goopy over-lubed look on their switch parts. Has anyone else had to redo their switches because they went too heavy on the lube?

That one Saturday where I fixed 3 things before noon felt incredible

Last weekend I woke up early and decided to tackle some broken stuff around the house. First I replaced the handle on my busted coffee maker with a part I found at Goodwill for 2 bucks. Then I patched a hole in my jeans with a iron-on patch from the dollar store. And then I tightened the loose screws on my nightstand so it stopped wobbling. By 11am I had hot coffee, patched pants, and a stable table. Best morning I have had in months. Does anyone else get that rush when you knock out multiple small fixes in one day?

Kinda miss the old days of running a cutterhead by feel

I had to decide between upgrading to a modern digital control panel or keeping my old manual clutch setup on the Ellicott 370 I run on the Mississippi. I stuck with the manual levers because it felt more natural, but after three straight nights of heavy clay I started wondering if the automation would have saved my back. Any of you guys made the switch from old school controls and actually preferred it?

Finally managed to replace my own brake pads at the auto shop parking lot

So I've been putting off doing my own brakes for like two years. Last weekend I pulled into the AutoZone on Main Street and just decided to do it right there in the lot. I watched a YouTube video on my phone while swapping the pads on my 2016 F-150. Took me about 2 hours but I saved $180 compared to what my mechanic quoted me. Has anyone else done their first brake job in a random parking lot lol?

My debit card got blocked at a gas station in Phoenix because of a weird fraud alert

I was trying to pay for gas at a Circle K on 7th Street when my card got declined. My bank, Chase, sent a text saying they flagged it as suspicious activity because I was 300 miles from home. I had to call their 800 number right there at the pump to confirm it was me. Has anyone else had their card frozen just for traveling within the same state?

Shoutout to the binder who showed me a different way to back a book in Chicago

I was at the Guild of Book Workers fair there last year and saw someone using a bone folder to shape the spine before gluing, not after. They were working on a 19th century ledger and the results were way cleaner. I've done it that way on my last 30 books and the rounding is so much sharper. Anyone else switch up their backing routine after seeing something in person?

Tried a new pen for my weekly spread and it bled through three pages

I bought a cheap brush pen from the dollar store last week to try some new lettering. I tested it on a scrap page and it seemed fine, so I used it for my Monday header. The ink soaked right through that page, the next one, and even showed up on the third. Now I have ghosting on three future weekly logs. Anyone know a good brush pen that doesn't bleed on regular notebook paper?
