Tried laminate flooring with a utility knife instead of a laminate cutter. Never again.

I was replacing the floor in my 12x15 living room and thought I could save $60 by using a utility knife to snap the planks. After three hours of crooked cuts and wasted boards, I drove to Home Depot and grabbed a basic cutter for $40. The difference was night and day. Has anyone else tried to cheap out on a tool and regretted it?

Man utility knives are for scoring drywall or opening boxes, not flooring. You need a sharp blade that goes all the way through the laminate or the snap is always gonna be rough. Ive seen guys try it with a circular saw set too deep too and it just chips the surface every time. A dedicated cutter is Worth every penny because the blade is designed to cut clean without splintering. Save the utility knife for your next carpet install maybe but not laminate.

Wait, how many times do you have to buy flooring twice because the first cut was garbage? Thats the real math here. Scoring and snapping works on thicker planks but the cheap stuff from the big box stores just crumbles or bends instead of breaking clean. Ive watched guys fight a scored piece for 10 minutes, then end up with a half inch of jagged edge they gotta hide under baseboard anyway. The dedicated cutter gives you that clean shear on the first pass, every time, and honestly it saves more time than it costs. Plus the blades stay sharp way longer than a utility knife because theyre made for the abuse. Once you use one, youll never go back to that snapping roulette.
