Bought a 'for parts' PS3 that just needed a new thermal paste job...

Spent $40 on it thinking I'd get a cheap fix, but the power supply was actually fried and I didn't have the right tools to test it first. Ended up wasting the cash and now I have a pile of spare parts... What's the best way to check a console's power supply before you buy it?

Man that really sucks, been there myself. How about bringing a small power strip with you to test it? You need to see if it gets any light at all. A multimeter is the real way to check, but that takes some know how. Honestly, for parts only consoles, you just have to expect some are totally dead.

Bringing a power strip is a solid move, but it only tells you if it gets power. You really need to check the voltage with a meter to know what's actually working. Buying for parts is always a gamble on a total brick.

Heard a guy fried his console testing voltage wrong once.
