Hit 100 rejections in my short story submissions last week

Man, 100 rejections sounds like an achievement in itself honestly. I mean @lucas498, at what point do you just frame them on the wall like a participation trophy? My buddy in Chicago got rejected from 15 coffee shops for his open mic night before one finally gave him a shot, and now he's a local legend. Maybe that's where the real art comes from though, learning to laugh off the "no's" while you keep scribbling. Either way, you're building a weird kind of stamina, right? Or maybe just a really thick skin for people not getting it yet.

Had to choose between a dig in Greece or a lab job in Boston. I picked the lab, and honestly, it was the best call for my career.

Read a book called "Shop Class as Soulcraft" a while back that talked about this exact thing. Basically said white collar work can hollow you out because you never see the finished product of what you do. That desk job grind sounds rough. Maybe a good choice is one that leaves you enough energy to figure out the next move.

That forge weld that popped while I was quenching it in Austin

What is it about the finish that makes you rush it?

Rant: I remember when we had to run four wires for every sensor

Honestly that's so true. I was just at the gym and saw a guy with wireless earbuds, wireless headphones over them, and a wireless heart rate monitor on his arm. It's getting wild. Even my electric toothbrush has a wireless charger now. Like, what's next, a wireless toaster?

Warning: I stopped using yearly reviews and switched to quick daily check-ins with my team

My old boss did something similar but he would do it while walking around the store floor with a cup of coffee. People actually started to look forward to those little chats because they knew he wasn't going to lecture them about some performance metric from six months ago. The funny thing was that it totally backfired on him in one way though. Everyone got so comfortable telling him about their problems that he ended up with a wait list of people wanting to talk to him before their shift started. He had to set a timer on his phone to keep each check in under five minutes or he would never get any other work done. But the complaints went way down and the repair crew started finishing jobs faster because they didn't have to wait for approvals anymore.
