Let's argue: Should you book hostels or hotels as a digital nomad?

I spent 6 weeks bouncing through Chiang Mai last year. Hostels were cheap, like $8 a night, but I couldn't take a single work call without background noise. Hotels cost $30 but gave me solid WiFi and quiet. I wasted probably 3 full days hunting for decent coffee shops as backup workspaces. Which side do you land on for getting work done on the road?

Oh man, nobody's mentioned the shower factor yet. After a month in hostels I was timing my morning showers around the 7am rush of people trying to look fresh for their elephant sanctuary tours. Hotels let me shower at 2pm if I wanted, which was huge when I was working late editing photos. Plus you ever try to dry your hair with a hostel towel that feels like sandpaper? Not great before a client video call. That $22 difference paid for itself in not being cranky and damp all the time.

You said "solid WiFi and quiet" - how fast was the hotel internet actually?
